The project site is the neighbour of an important historical heritage, Sant Agostino church. This religiously and historically important monument extents underground beyond its footprint. Our research about the competition showed us the existence of the sacred spaces carved in the rocks of Matera. The competition site covers several branches of these cave systems. 

While making the design decisions, the presence of this underground cave system played a primary role. Deliberately, the upper levels of the cave system branch that extend into the competition site have been not disturbed by the architectural program. A deep garden had been designed for taking the light down to the lower levels. By using the great chance of having one of the entrances of the sacred chamber in the competition site, a connecting chapel has been designed as an extension of the exhibition halls. This chapel works as the end point of the exhibition visit but it also an opening into the sacred chamber as the beginning of an extended visit of the Sant Agostino church.

By providing this direct connection, the new museum of culture merges fined arts, religious heritage and contemporary life.

 

The building program consists of an auditorium, several exhibition halls, painting and sculpture labs and cafe.

Proje alanı önemli bir tarihi miras olan Sant Agostino kilisesine komşu bir alan. Dini ve tarihi açıdan önemli bu anıt yer altında kendi yapısal izinin sınırlarını aşıyor. Yarışma kapsamında yaptığımız araştırma bu alanda MAtera'nın taşlarına oyularak yaratılmış kutsal mekanların varlığını bize gösterdi. 

Tasarım kararlarını alırken, yer altındaki bu mağara sisteminin varlığı birincil girdi oldu. Bilinçli olarak, mağara sisteminin dallarından üst kotlara yayılarak yarışma alanına girenler mimari program kapsamında müdehale görmedi. Bu alanda derin bir bahçe yaratılıp kültür merkezinin alt kotlarına gün ışığı alındı. Kutsal mekanlara açılan girişlerden birinin yarışma alanında olması şansını değerlendirilip, sergi salonlarının bir uzantısı olacak bağlantı şapeli tasarlandı. Bu şapel sergi ziyaretçileri için bir son nokta işlevi görmesi yanında, Sant Agostino Kilisesi'ni kapsayan genişletilmiş bir ziyaret için başlangıç noktası olarak da işler. 

Bu doğrudan bağlantının sağlanması ile yeni Matera Kültür Müzesi güzel sanatları, dini mirası ve çağdaş hayatı birleştirir. 

 

Yapı programı oditoryum, sergileme alanları, resim ve heykel laboratuarı ve kafe gibi işlevleri içerir.
